Government Shocker! The 401k Form 5500 May Become Useful Soon

Most 401k plans – except certain one person plans – must file a Form 5500 annually to satisfy their annual reporting requirements under ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code. The goal of the Form 5500 is to help the government and other stakeholders perform data-based 401k plan research.

If you did not file your plan's 2015 Form 5500 by July 31, a deadline extension was filed on your behalf. The extension's deadline is October 17. Please file your 5500 prior to the deadline to avoid penalties.

Deadline for distributing Summary Annual Report (SAR) to participants, provided deadline for Form 5500 was not extended (later of nine months after close of plan year or two months after due date for Form 5500).

 

October 17

Extended deadline for filing Form 5500.

 

Deadline for adopting a retroactive amendment to correct an IRC Section 410(b) coverage or IRC Section 401(a)(4) nondiscrimination failure for 2015.

 

Extended deadline for filing tax returns for unincorporated businesses and final contribution deadline for deductibility for these entities.
